Pepe Dámaso Art Museum

Volcanoes of Light

The proposed building pretends to be a new cultural symbol for the Municipality putting in value the work of the artist Pepe Dámaso natural of Gran Canaria, attracting visitors from all the region towards the town of Pájara, in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands.

We took the maximum from the proposed plot for the building, introducing an extensive program capable of promoting the artistic and cultural spirit in Pájara.

The exterior appearance is thought to achieve a good mimesis with the context, rehabilitating the façades of existing buildings maintaining the major construction. The new pieces will have with volcanic stone façades, establishing a dialogue between the preexisting, the Tradition and the natural landscape of Fuerteventura Island.
Modernity and tradition in the same intervention!

- Project Decisions:

The building will have a main access courtyard to access through it to the museum reception. This patio will work as a wellcome cloister from where start or finish the visit. Connected to it we will also find the shop and the multifunctional room proposed for varied activities like classrooms, workshops, small auditorium, celebrations…

All the new building spaces, used as exhibition spaces, will enjoy natural light and ventilation thanks to the strategically oriented skylights that provide a homogeneous light from the deck.

The lighting and ventilation studies will contribute to good light conditioning, sustainability and building´s energy saving.

The proposed building is a mix of old constructions with new modules, able to comply with all the local regulations, adapted perfectly to its surroundings, and unique and special enough to become a new architectonic landmark for the entire island.

The structure is simple and functional and the projected construction systems are simple and always seek the principles of energy efficiency and quality in construction.

The patios will help to promote cross ventilation, and to keep the new modules opened to them, making the building more comfortable, thanks to Fuerteventura´s good weather.
